The IRC is launching a Refugee Youth Mentoring Program, in which Refugee Youth Mentors (RYM) are assigned on a one-on-one basis to mentor refugee youth who are classified as at-risk.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The Refugee Youth Mentor would meet with their mentee on a weekly to bi-weekly basis to provide mentorship in the possible areas of career interests, academic assistance, and providing advice. The RYM is welcomed to join IRC-planned career exploration or cultural immersion field trips over the year but must be available for a two-hour initial training at the beginning of the assignment and be available for monthly check-ins with the Youth Connection Coach.

INTENDED OUTCOME: The Refugee Youth Mentor will benefit from building a meaningful and life-changing relationship with these youth and help shape and impact their lives through sharing from their own experiences and life-stories. The RYM will also gain insights on the needs of the refugee and fringe youth communities in San Diego and learn how provide culturally humble and trauma-informed support for individuals from these communities.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Able to commit to at least 1 hour every 1-2 weeks to meet with Refugee Youth mentee either at IRC offices at City Heights or El Cajon, or a public location (mentoring day and time will be agreed upon between mentor and mentee)
  • Able to commit to 15-minute monthly check-ins with Youth Connection Coach (can be over the phone)
  • Able to attend an evening 2-hour free Refugee Youth Mentor Training that includes "How to be a Credible Messenger", Trauma-Informed Practices, ESL Strategies, Cultural Humility and Gender Equity, and Basic Mentoring Framework skills.
  • Pass Live Scan and background check
