Everyone should have access to healthy food. Second Harvest provides nutritious groceries and fresh produce at distribution sites throughout Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. These sites are volunteer-run and rely on committed, dedicated volunteers who can support the effort on an ongoing basis. We invite you to join us in providing a warm and welcoming environment for our clients.

Food distribution is a hands-on volunteer role. Responsibilities could include:

• Assisting with distribution set-up
• Lifting, moving and arranging food (25-50 lbs.) to facilitate the distribution process
• Greeting clients and answering questions
• Distributing food safely and helping clients carry food to their cars
• Cleaning up, including breaking down boxes and removing empty pallets
• Providing a great experience for clients

This volunteer opportunity might be for you if:

• You are at least 18 years old
• You can make a 6 month commitment
• You have the ability to perform with a high standard of customer service, professional conduct and responsibility
• You are friendly and enjoy working with people of different backgrounds and nationalities
• You exhibit compassion and sensitivity to all people
• You have the ability to maintain confidentiality of client and volunteer information
• You have the ability to implement a plan
• You enjoy working in a fast pace environment with many moving parts
• You enjoy physical activity and don’t mind getting a little messy
• You have experience responding to issues quickly
• You can maintain and encourage safe working conditions
• You have experience working with volunteers
• You are able to lift 50 pounds

Experience that is nice to have:

• Experience working for a non-profit or representing another organization as a volunteer
• Experience working with low-income families and individuals
• Bilingual in English/Spanish, English/Vietnamese, English/Mandarin
