Co-leads the NAMI Family-to-Family education course which is a free, 12-session educational program for family members, significant others, and friends of people living with mental health illness. The course is designed to facilitate a better understanding of mental health illness, increase coping skills, and empower participants to become advocates for their family members. It is a designated evidence-based program.
Requirements: Prospective teachers must be family members (parents, siblings, adult children, spouses or partners) of individuals with mental illness. Ideally will have taken the NAMI Family-to-Family course. Because the course requires considerable lecturing, must be a capable reader comfortable reading out loud. Background check required.
Certification training: Three-day weekend training sponsored by NAMI Wisconsin. Offered twice a year. Training, lodging, and meals are paid for by affiliate and state organizations.
- Arrive one half hour before group start time.
- Sign in as volunteer.
- Collect group folder containing attendance sheets and new enrollment forms.
- Read announcements in the volunteer work room.
- Before and after group walk through center for general cleanliness.
- Set up needed supplies for group.
- Unlock center.
- Make sure there are cups by water cooler for participants.
- Set up snacks as appropriate.
- Fill out top of attendance sheet appropriately.
- Have each participant sign attendance sheet (neatly). If group facilitators are peers they should sign attendance sheet as well.
- New participants should be welcomed given a quick tour and asked to fill out new enrollment form.
- Group introductions (as needed).
- Review group guidelines.
- At end of group attendance sheets and enrollments forms are placed in Executive Director’s mailbox.
- Make sure all participants have been picked up.
- Replace program folder.
- Sign out as volunteer.
- Other duties as requested by program coordinator or executive director.
Commitment: Must be willing to teach at least two 12-week courses in the two to three years following certification.

We are here to fight against the stigma that surrounds these illnesses. If you or a loved one is suffering, know that you are not alone, we are here to help.
Our affiliate provides outreach activities in the community. To learn more about NAMI or mental illness contact us. We also offer NAMI In Our Own Voice Presentations. These presentations are available to a variety of groups in the community (civic, school, church or business) to hear from individuals who share their personal stories of recovery.
NAMI Washington County, Inc. is doing great things in our community, bringing hope, help and recovery to those who are affected by mental illness.
