By volunteering at the 2021 Austin Out of the Darkness Community Walk to benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), you will be supporting thousands of people nationwide to raise money for AFSP's vital research and education programs to prevent suicide and save lives, increase national awareness about depression and suicide, and assist survivors of suicide loss.

Please help us raise awareness to increase the prevention of suicide. Help us reduce the stigma of mental illness and support our walk attendees to honor their loved ones. they have lost to suicide.

Who you are:

You are passionate about supporting those affected by suicide. You understand the sensitive nature of our cause and are able to express a supportive and compassionate demeanor. You want to help wherever you are needed.

What you will be doing:

Tasks will vary depending on shift and need. Early shift (6am start) and shifts ending at 1pm will require some lifting to include moving boxes, chairs, tables, etc. for set up and take down. General walk support may include encouraging attendees, assisting with walk activities, registration, selling AFSP merchandise, or picking up after the walkers.

This is an outdoor event. Masks are encouraged. Sanitizer stations and masks will be provided.

Established in 1987, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is a voluntary health organization that gives those affected by suicide a nationwide community empowered by research, education and advocacy to take action against this leading cause of death.

  • Funding scientific research
  • Educating the public about mental health and suicide prevention
  • Advocating for public policies in mental health and suicide prevention
  • Supporting survivors of suicide loss and those affected by suicide in our mission

Led by CEO Robert Gebbia and headquartered in New York, and with a public policy office in Washington, D.C., AFSP has local chapters in all 50 states with programs and events nationwide.
