Volunteer Citizenship Education Office Assistant

Background: Founded in 1918, Catholic Charities of Los Angeles is a leading non-profit organization that provides permanent residents with a path to citizenship through free and low-cost legal services. Under a USCIS grant, Immigration and Refugee Resettlement Services offers USCIS approved, ESL-based Civics classes to prepare naturalization applicants to take the Citizenship Test.
Purpose: By supporting the Education Coordinator with all aspects of the Citizenship Education Program, Volunteer Office Assistant will help immigrants move towards the goal of becoming a US citizen!
Responsibilities:
- Support the Education Coordinator in all aspects of the program
- Address office needs
- Work on on-going projects
- Conduct data entry and filing
- Communicate with students and program partners
Qualifications:
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication
- Strong organization skills
- Willingness to adapt and be flexible
- Cultural sensitivity
- Desire to work with people from other cultures and limited English speakers
- Assist with ESL-based Citizenship Classes when possible
- Spanish/English, Mandarin/English fluency preferred
Commitment: 14 weeks, 3-5 days/week
Training: The Volunteer Office Assistant will receive training from the Education Coordinator in the citizenship process and client demographics. This position is supervised by the Education Coordinator.
Location: Pico-Union/Westlake (main office).
Benefits: This is an unpaid volunteer position that offers insight into the citizenship process, USCIS and the operations of a nonprofit organization and hands-on experience to enhance one’s resume. Volunteers will gain training in ESL & Civics instruction and the opportunity to interact with clients from around the world. Volunteers will receive a letter of recommendation.
