The engineer is to serve as a mentor to the students. "Mentoring is a system for pairing an experienced person with a lesser experienced one, for the purpose of having the lesser experienced person grow and develop the required competencies."
He/she may be involved in all phases of the competition as an advisor to provide input and technical assistance. It is important to tie-in real life engineering experiences as students work on the competition. Students must do all of the actual work, such as the computer design of the city, building the model, writing the essay and abstract, and giving the verbal presentation.
Mentoring is "about advising, teaching, coaching, and providing a guidance system. It's not handholding. It's not making decisions that should be made by the individual. It's not promoting the cause of an individual for some personal recognition or gain. It's not only working with fast-trackers.
The mentor helps the engineer make the transition from the academic to the real world of engineering."

Description
Welcome to Future City, a national competition that you'll find as fulfilling as it is fun for your students. Now in its second decade, the National Engineers Week Future City Competition is a program developed for seventh and eighth grade students to help them discover and foster interests in math, science and engineering. As you'll soon discover, it's a program that's both challenging and stimulating for everyone involved.
You'll find three useful tools to help you prepare for this competition. Your handbook is the most comprehensive source for rules, instructions, general information and useful preparation tips and techniques. This website is also a good source for timely updates about the competition, and contains information not found in the handbook.
Future City will teach them skills such as writing, public speaking, teamwork, time management, problem solving and new computer skills. Above all, they'll find it fun since it allows them to use their imaginations.
You will definitely see the rewards of this program clearly displayed on the faces of the students, teachers and engineering mentors - looks of joy, pride and accomplishment. Again, welcome to the Future City Competition. One of the most memorable chapters of your life, and the lives of your students, is about to begin.
