Volunteer Citizenship Class Translator

Immigration Services

Background: Founded in 1918, Catholic Charities of Los Angeles is a leading non-profit organization that provides permanent residents with a path to citizenship through free and low-cost legal services. Under a USCIS grant, Immigration and Refugee Resettlement Services offers USCIS approved, ESL-based Civics classes to prepare naturalization applicants to take the Citizenship Test.

Purpose: By supporting immigrants with free ESL-based Civics classes, the Volunteer Translator will help immigrants move towards the goal of becoming a US citizen!

Responsibilities:

  • Translate lessons during class
  • Translate orientation and assist in registration of students
  • Explain required CASAS & AACE assessments (Pre/Post Tests) to students
  • Communicate with Education Coordinator to ensure students understand lesson and material

Qualifications:

  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication
  • Cultural sensitivity
  • Desire to work with people from other cultures and limited English speakers
  • Spanish/English fluency preferred

Commitment: 14 weeks, 3 hours/week

Training: The Volunteer Translator will receive training from the Education Coordinator in the citizenship process, client demographics, types of English language learners, ESL strategies, as well as "best practices" for student engagement. This position is supervised by the Education Coordinator.

Location: Varies and flexible. Pico-Union/Westlake, Norwalk, Burbank and/or other locations.

Benefits: This is an unpaid volunteer position that offers insight into the citizenship process, USCIS and the operations of a nonprofit organization and hands-on experience to enhance one’s resume. Volunteers will gain training in ESL & Civics instruction and the opportunity to interact with clients from around the world. Volunteers will receive a letter of recommendation.
