Why College Essays?

826 Boston is a nonprofit youth writing and publishing organization that empowers traditionally underserved students ages 6-18 to find their voices, tell their stories, and gain communication skills to succeed in school and in life. For underserved students, a college essay is a powerful vehicle to tell a story on a student’s own terms. The format of a college essay allows students to use their stories and voice to distinguish themselves to an admissions committee.

College essay assistance doesn’t just increase the chances that a student will be admitted to college. The process equips students to tell their own story and confers a lifelong lesson in agency, self-advocacy, and confidence. Volunteers consistently report that the process is a memorable and meaningful experience. Students report that having a sounding board and feedback on their essay increases their confidence.
