Mission Statement

OneReef is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded on the insight that local communities are the most effective environmental stewards when armed with the right partnerships and resources. We work at the forefront of coral reef conservation in Palau, Micronesia, and other Pacific Islands. Our mission is to serve the needs of local communities who protect their reefs.

Description

Protected reefs produce benefits, including recovered fish stocks, strengthened cultural values, employment, and climate change resilience. OneReef creates coral reef protected areas by giving local communities the resources and support they need to manage their own coral reefs. Since 2012, we have partnered with over 20 communities to create 450,000 acres of protected coral reef. Currently, 20 more communities are asking OneReef to partner with them to help manage their reefs, and by 2023 OneReef expects to be positioned to protect more than 2.5 million acres, or 25% of Micronesia’s coral reefs.

When protected areas are successfully enforced and monitored, communities benefit from more fish to catch, jobs, training, secure tourism revenues, and pride from recaptured cultural values and protection of their legacy. By creating these incentive programs today, we are supporting local action in the face of climate change and human threats.
