Academic Mentor with BPS Student

Looking to help Boston Public Schools students during these critical times? With the adjustment to virtual learning, the need for student support has never been greater. Boston Partners in Education is seeking STEM-minded, volunteer academic mentors to support Boston’s public schools students. While we have opportunities available in all subject areas and grade levels (pre K-12), we do have a particularly high need for adults who are interested in working on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) concepts with students grades 9-12. This opportunity will take place during the 20/21 school year which spans from September to June.

Who are Academic Mentors?

Our mentors are community members like you and me, devoting time from their daily lives to help our young people succeed. They come from all walks of life, ethnicities, and levels of education and experience.

What do Academic Mentors do?

Academic mentors work one-on-one or in a small group with students for an hour a week during the school day. As an academic mentor, you help provide the extra individual attention that supports a student’s academic and personal growth, as well as needed consistency in these uncertain times. Virtual opportunities are available in all grades and subject areas.

Student/Volunteer matches are made based on your preferences:

  • Availability
  • Subject matter
  • Grade level

What else do I need to know?

No experience is necessary-- just a willingness to help students thrive. Boston Partners provides training and match support to help facilitate a successful match. We are required by the Boston Public Schools to run a CORI/SORI background check on each potential volunteer; this background check is run at no cost to you.

Matching priority will be given to those who currently live or have lived in the Greater Boston Area.

Mission Statement

Boston Partners in Education enhances the academic achievement and nurtures the growth of Boston's public school students by providing them with focused, individualized in-school volunteer support. With the commitment and involvement of the entire community, all students in Boston will develop the skills, self-confidence and motivation to recognize and achieve their full potential.

Description

Boston Partners in Education has been supporting teachers and students in Boston Public Schools for over 50 years. Our trained volunteers serve as academic mentors to help students gain the skills, self-confidence, and motivation they need to succeed in school and in life.

Our academic mentors are community members who volunteers in pre K-12 classrooms in the Boston Public Schools (BPS). Mentors offer support in any subject area, though we focus on ELA and math for grades K-8. They commit to spending the year with the same student, or small group of students, every week for an hour a week during the school day. Ideally, the match stays together over the course of a few years, thus forming a bond that goes beyond academics.
