Bayada Hospice is looking for volunteers for our Memory Catcher Program which captures the life stories of our hospice patients. Each volunteer will meet with a hospice patient several times to gather material to create some kind of framework for understanding and enjoying past experiences - written work, video recording, audio recording, PowerPoint with narration or music, art project, word cloud, or some combination of these elements. The final product will be whatever seems appropriate based on the preferences, abilities, and creativity of the patient and volunteer.
It's hard to say exactly how often the volunteer will meet with the patient as it will depend on the individuals involved. It may be that some family members will want to participate in this project as well - provide photos, story cues, etc. It may be that the volunteer will "interview" the patient - we have interview questions that can be used to start the conversation. It may be that the patient will tell their story without prompting. We don’t have a set formula for how this will work and expect to figure it out as we go along.
If the hospice patient is a veteran, the volunteer may want to consider being part of the Veterans History Project through the Library of Congress. Here is a link to information about participating in the Veterans History Project: https://www.loc.gov/vets/kit.html
Our application process includes an interview, background checks, and training, plus volunteers receive ongoing support and recognition from our staff. For more information and to volunteer, please contact Beverly Hill, Volunteer Coordinator, at 802-448-1610 or email bhill2@bayada.com
