We are looking for 10 volunteers to help with site preparation and building a new play system at our Genesee Early Learning Center. Programs at Genesee provide support for low income children ages two and a half to five years and their families through early learning and comprehensive services where the child and family grow and learn together.
While being handy is helpful, it is not a requirement for this project. The event will happen rain or shine! What will volunteers be doing at the event? While the exact tasks can vary, volunteers will help with the following:
Part 1: Site Preparation:
- Site access: removal of section of 4-foot chain link fence for easy access to site during project
- Site leveling: Approx. 23 X 20’ section of side lot
- Site is a lot adjacent to Genesee Center that has not been commercially leveled to accommodate install. This area that will be used is crowned, so the center is higher than the areas along the fence. Site will need to be leved prior to install of play system to approx. 9 inches below the rest of the play yard so we can place woodchips.
- Leveling will need to ensure proper drainage is accommodated
- Site preparation will include removal of topsoil, in 30 x 22’ section, some removal and disbursal of displaced dirt
Part 2: Playground Install:
- Install of barrier lining inside of play area base.
- Toy install/built and leveled will follow install directions
- Following install, commercial grade wood chips for playgrounds level and at base of toy area
Volunteers should come prepared with:
- Clothing that can get dirty (because it will!)
- Long pants and long sleeves
- Sturdy shoes that can handle some mud (hiking boots, rubber boots, etc.NO sandals, flats or heels)
- Rain gear and warm layers -OR- sun protection (check the weather!)
- Sack lunch and snacks (we will have some food on site, but bring your favorite snack)
- Full water bottle (we will have a jug on-site for re-fills)
- Travel mug for tea/coffee
- Favorite pair of gloves
Optional Tools (clearly labeled)
- Shovels, buckets, wheelbarrows, drills (with screwdriver attachment), hammer
