Audio Book Cartridge and Reader
This is an example of the audio book cartridge and the player that reads the book.

Have you ever listened to an audio book that made the words come alive in your mind? Thanks to that narrator, you probably remember particular scenes or moments in vivid detail. We’d like you to help us do that for others.

Join a dedicated team of folks at the State Library of Oregon making the joys of reading accessible to Oregon’s print-disabled community through recording books. As a volunteer Narrator you’ll record pre-selected books in a recording booth at the State Library. These books are then made publicly available through the Talking Books and Braille Library.

What we’re looking for:

  • Commitment to at least one (1), 1-hour shift per week* at the State Library, for 2 years
  • A strong, clear, and consistent reading voice
  • Ability to work independently after orientation and training period
  • Ability to receive constructive feedback positively
  • Basic familiarity with audio recording software and hardware (preferred, but not required)

*additional shifts up to a maximum of three (3), per week may be considered

The Talking Book & Braille Library is a free library available to Oregonians who are blind, visually impaired, reading impaired or physically impaired. As a Narrator, you will be helping us expand our collection and make more book titles available to our users. Please consider joining our team!

Volunteers promote community awareness of the many services of the State Library and assist staff in the achievement of the mission and goals of the State Library. State Library staff are encouraged to assist in the creation of meaningful, productive, and varied roles volunteers can fill throughout the library. The Volunteer Coordinator provides oversight of the agency’s volunteer program.

Description

The State Library of Oregon cultivates, preserves, and delivers library and information services to foster lifelong leaning and community engagement.

There are three main divisions of the State Library:

Government Information and Library Services provides research and reference assistance to state government and to persons on official state business. Their in-depth collection of more than one million items specializes in business, history, political and social sciences. The collection also includes federal and state government publications and a comprehensive collection of materials about Oregon.

Library Support and Development Services plans for statewide library development; consults with local librarians, citizens and government officials; reports library statistics; and administers state and federal library grant programs.

The Talking Book and Braille Library is the regional library for the Library of Congress' National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled. Oregonians who are unable to read standard print because of a visual, physical, or reading disability are eligible to receive free audio and Braille materials either through the mail or via download.
