Paramedics and medical volunteers for health care projects in Quetzaltenango/Guatemala

ORGANIZATION: Beyond South America

  • 1 person is interested

Guatemala is one of the poorest countries in Central America and the private health sector is booming, while public healthcare lacks funding and political support. In Quetzaltenango, the country’s second biggest city, institutions like the volunteer firefighters who respond to emergencies and the city’s health center where people get free consultations are fundamental for a huge part of the population, who simply can’t afford a treatment in the private sector. Dedicated national and international volunteers supporting these institutions sustain their existence. The ambulances of this little volunteer station in the center of Quetzaltenango run from 6-10 emergencies daily and during the opening hours from 8:30-16:30 the health center is buzzing. They need volunteers with experience in first response to support the ambulance and to help out with vaccinations and checking in on babies that are brought in by their families from the rural regions around the city. People with more medical education and better skills in Spanish may assist the doctors during consultations and take on more responsibility - this also depends on the duration of your stay.

Possible tasks: support the ambulance as a paramedic, cleaning the units, checking equipment, support the front desk of the health center, help out with vaccination, monitoring the development of babies, assist the doctors, consults etc.

Mission Statement

"Be the change you want to see in the world" - Mahatma Gandhi - It may sound naïve, but we actually believe that volunteering can change the world for the better. Acts of solidarity, global learning and intercultural exchange break down borders that exist between cultures and in your own mind. Anyone who has ever worked in another country, who has given his time and energy to a good cause, knows that this can be an unforgettable experience, even a life changing moment. Your own impressions and the ones you leave in others, the learning experiences on both sides, bring the world closer together.

Description

Beyond South America is a small nonprofit agency in Cochabamba, Bolivia. It all started in 2012 with a few volunteer positions at "Casa de la Alegria", a foundation that provides therapeutic workshops to youth- and childcare projects in and around Cochabamba.

We are still a small, familiar organization but have grown over the years and by now have partnerships in Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, and Guatemala. We are looking for enthusiastic, open-minded and skilled volunteers for a wide variety of positions in our handpicked projects.

The staff of Beyond South America have all lived their own lives of voluntary work all around the world, so we understand the needs of volunteers, their concerns and wishes. We also care about our collaborating organizations, we offer only sustainable projects, that guarantee safety and on site support for our volunteers.

We try to combine the needs of projects and volunteers with our work and work towards finding the right project for volunteers and the right volunteer for the projects. Therefore, we want to get to know you, learn more about your background, your abilities, desires and fears, in order to propose suitable projects to you.

Check out our vacancies and please note, that ALL the profit of Beyond South America still goes to the Foundation "Casa de la Alegría" supporting and sustaining their work. So volunteering with Beyond South America means, you contribute directly to a good cause, bettering the lives of children in Bolivia.
