Volunteer opportunities are for 1:1 tutoring of elementary school children in reading and math.
No prior experience is necessary. Tutors receive all the training, materials and weekly coaching required to help a second grade girl or boy gain the confidence and academic skills required to be successful in 3rd grade and beyond. Children Rising programs are structured so that it is easy for you to step in and be effective immediately. And the reward of watching a student progress as they reach their potential is priceless.
We invite you to join the hundreds of volunteers who are nurturing and equipping students to rise above the challenges they face in school and outside of school. An engaged, caring community reaching these vulnerable children at a critical time in their life is the key to our approach. Together, we are making a generational difference in Oakland and surrounding East Bay communities and helping to reduce the achievement gap created by educational inequity.
"’Children Rising cares so much about these kids that it invests the time and effort to train the tutors and provide us with tools to do a good job."
- Linda Hawkins, Reading Tutor

About Children Rising
2633 Telegraph Ave., 412, Oakland, CA 94612, US
Our mission is to nurture and equip vulnerable children to rise above the challenges created by generations of poverty, violence and educational inequity.
Children Rising is an Oakland education non-profit founded in 2001. Our Community Engagement Model is poised to make a generational impact in our city. We are educating and energizing the broader community; recruiting, training, and supporting an array of highly skilled and experienced tutors and mentors; developing key strategic partnerships with schools and community partners; and empowering thousands of vulnerable children and youth to rise above the challenges they face. Our vision is for every struggling child to be reached by a caring member of the community at a critical time in their life in order to nurture hope, the courage to dream, and the opportunity to thrive. We empower children and youth attending public schools most affected by poverty, violence and educational inequity by raising awareness and rallying community support for their needs; and by galvanizing and guiding volunteers to teach, mentor, and nourish the children so they may develop academic and life skills to realize their God-given potential.
