Mission Statement
Project READS helps students n first to third grade make progress to achieve grade-level reading.
Description
If you love kids, reading or want to touch the future, we are looking for individuals who can donate one hour each week from mid-September to April (not including school breaks for holidays) to meet with a child looking for reading help.
Project READS tutoring session begins with 10 to 15 minutes of large-group read-aloud. This not only allows the students to calm down after their busy day, but also provides an opportunity for them to have a snack. The next 30 minutes involve one-to-one instruction, focusing on the development of the four areas of Language Arts: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. During the last 10 to 15 minutes of the tutoring session, students may continue their one-to-one literacy work or play literacy games with their mentors and other students, if they wish. Mentors are instructed in how to engage, encourage, and motivate the students; and how to help them develop comprehension, fluency, and the love of reading
