As a volunteer on the Conservation programme you will be directly involved in the establishment of new and exciting youth led sustainable enterprises in the local community, helping to provide an alternative occupation for young people to Palm Oil plantation work.

The Conservation Programme aims to establish new youth-led sustainable enterprises in Bukit Lawang and guide current business owners towards sustainable best practice in order to protect the severely endangered Leuser Ecosystem. You will guide your 'entrepreneurs' through the process of establishing their dream job by covering the following key areas; - Idea Generation - Market Research - Research Analysis - Business Model Canvassing (BMC) - Managing Finances & Budgeting (Cash Flow) - Sustainability (Green Factor) - Business Management At the end of the programme volunteers will assist in the setting up and starting of these youth led sustainable enterprises, reducing poverty through livlihoods diversification and reducing the negative environmental impact through facilitating a workforce shift to sustainable jobs. On top of this, volunteers will assist in the delivery of our very own Youth Ranger Programme designed by our project partners at Darwin Animal Doctors. This project aims to give young people in Bukit Lawang a taste of the Ranger Patrol responsibilities and facilitate a better understanding of the importance of saving animals and the environment. This project will develop employability skills whilst developing an understanding of the importance and methods of conservation here in the Sumatran Jungle. Through this project we hope to inspire a sense of ownership amongst young people for their planet whilst fostering a sense of belonging and the eagerness to help and support their local environment.

The Programme is 60 days long and costs $850 dollars, which is just $106 per week. Included in this is two meal on weekdays, pick up and drop off at the airport, as well as accommodation.

There is also the opportunity within this placement to spend some time at our partner's eco-farm due to school holidays here in Sumatra.

Mission Statement

The purpose of the Bukit Lawang Trust is to: Enhance the education of the community of the village of Bukit Lawang and the people of Bohorok region, North Sumatra, Indonesia and engage in Environmental and wildlife projects in connection with the Gunung Leuseur National Park.

Description

We run a free kindergarten every morning and have helped children to learn to read and write at all ages. We believe in education being the best route out of poverty and to the opportunity for a better life for the future.

After a devastating flood in 2003, Bukit Lawang Trust was established to provide medical aid to the local community. Once this function was no longer needed in the local community, the Trust was transformed into a community centre.

Since that time we have had over 24 volunteers and taught more than 1200 children.

Aini was our first teacher who we then sponsored to go to University to study English and is a success story and inspiration to many children in the village.

The main ethos of the Trust is that education is the best route out of poverty and so we just offer the opportunity for young people to learn English and increase their knowledge of the world and the environment through our lessons.

Bukit Lawang Trust is also very focused on Conservation and wishes to empower and enable the local community to protect and look after the Gunung Leuseur National Park as it is right on their doorstep.
