Volunteers Required for Tea Classes

As a non-profit organization, Universal Chan is dedicated to spreading the wisdom of the Chinese Zen tradition to enhance our life. At the same time, through our deep and wide connection with mainland China and Taiwan, we have access to many varieties of premium tea which enable us to seamlessly combine the value of tea and wisdom of Zen in our teaching.

We will provide free Meditative Tea Tasting classes at various senior centers and outside organizations, as well as hold our own weekly Saturday Tea Tastings at Universal Chan. We are looking for volunteers to assist these classes. Most of our volunteer opportunities for the tea classes require you to work for around 3.5 hrs long and typically take place in the morning or afternoon. We will show you the volunteer schedule and event dates once we meet each other in person for our first introductory meeting.

Job description:

The volunteer needs to arrive at Universal Chan (445 Colusa Ave., Kensington, CA 94707) on time. We will provide transportation to the senior centers. The work includes helping to set up the tea tasting implements in the classroom, setting up and decorating the tables, assisting in serving the tea during class, steeping tea, and cleaning up the implements after class. The total work time for each class varies from 4.5 hours to 8 hours depending on which event you sign up for. This is also a great opportunity for volunteers to learn some Zen teachings, meditation practice, and to explore the world of tea.

  1. People who have an interest in Zen teachings or tea are preferred.
  2. Volunteers must attend at least 2 Tea Class events AND 2 mandatory Tea Training sessions each month.
  3. Volunteers will be added to a WeChat group specifically to get updates and communicate about filling volunteer spots for Universal Chan events.

How to apply:

  1. If you are interested, please email info@universalchan.org to introduce yourself with your full name, brief description of why you're interested in this volunteer opportunity, current job position, current school that you are attending if you are a student, contact information, and which class(es) you can volunteer for. You may also include other helpful/relevant information about yourself that you would like us to know.
  2. Once we receive your email, we will set up a time to meet with you in person at Universal Chan on a Saturday at 8:00am (or a weekday afternoon) so that we can talk in more detail about what our non-profit organization does, and what your role, duties, and time commitment as a volunteer will look like.

  3. After our first meeting, you must attend a mandatory Tea Training the following Saturday from 2-4pm before you can participate in your first official Tea Class Volunteer event. You will be taught how to set up for the events, how to properly serve guests, and how to properly make tea in a gongfu ceremony and handle tea tools. You will be taught some meditation as well.

  4. Once you have completed one Tea Training session, you can sign up as a volunteer for our Tea Class events on our Wejoinin calendar.

  5. Important Note: To maintain your volunteer position, you must commit to helping at at least TWO Tea Class events per month, and attending TWO Tea Training sessions at Universal Chan per month.

Thank you! Looking forward to receiving your application!

About Universal Chan

445 Colusa Ave., Kensington, CA 94707, US

Mission Statement

Universal Chan is an international, donation-based, 501(c)(3) Buddhist non-profit organization derived from the Chinese Chan Tradition, founded by the Chan Monk Da Xing. Compared to China and other Asian countries where Buddhism is a prevalent religion, the US has only been exposed to Buddhism for less than a century. The goal of the organization and of its affiliations is to spread the Chan Teachings to deeply benefit those interested in learning the teachings of the Buddha. In doing this, we use a modern approach rooted in ancient tradition to expose people to other aspects of ancient Chinese culture connected to this teaching. We hope numerous people will come to learn how to apply this teaching in order to achieve a more satisfying life and find liberation in any situation.

Every Tuesday and Friday evening at 7:00pm we have a Dharma talk and meditation led by Chan monk Da Xing Fashi. At Universal Chan we do a wide variety of activities ranging from those more commonly practiced in many Buddhist centers, such as sitting meditation, to lesser known methods such as exercise and bowing Chan. Our Center also offers yoga, tai chi, and stretching classes. Some of our weekly events include Hiking Meditation and Meditative Tea Tasting classes (and also classes for UC Berkeley students and several Bay Area senior centers). In addition, we provide retreats of different time lengths in California and abroad to beginners, advanced practitioners, and monastics. All of our programs, activities, and events are donation-based. Your generosity will help us to continue to serve the community.

We'll work with your schedule.
