TITLE Volunteer
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Volunteers are willing to acquire interpretive skills to interpret park natural and cultural history to the public, inform the public regarding safety policies, and inform and inspire visitors to respect park resources.
DUTIES
After attending volunteer orientation, volunteers will learn to interpret the cultural history of Sutter’s Fort alongside current Docents, follow all policies and procedures as directed during orientation, including: daily sign-in/out, attend daily shift briefings, and inform paid staff of any safety/visitor concerns, respond to visitor inquiries regarding special features or layout of the park, location of restrooms, upcoming events, etc. Volunteers will circulate throughout the Fort grounds and offer assistance or information to visitor with discretion to visitors’ needs. Volunteers will actively engage public in interpretation and presentation of Fort themes and artifacts. With further training, volunteers may also participate in special events such as ELP and/or ELP Parent/Teacher Training, Hands on History, Sutter’s Fort or Bust, Scout Programs, Trappers Camp Programs, and/or special events. Volunteers will contribute positively to the Fort community.

TIME COMMITMENT
To maintain active volunteer status, each volunteer should serve around 50 hours per year. Recommended: 4-8 hours per month. (If you are unsure about the time commitment, we can figure out a way to meet your needs!)
QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS
Good communication skills and the ability to work independently. Good physical health to enable one to carry out the responsibilities of the position. Willingness to learn and share historic and cultural information and period crafts with the park visitor as well as fellow volunteers and Docents. The ability to make a serious commitment and to attend training, continuing education, and meetings. The willingness to support the mission and policies of California State Parks. Volunteers must have a valid driver’s license or identification card and be willing to be fingerprinted as part of the background check process.

This combination of big dreams, bold adventures and reality all manifest themselves at Sutter's Fort State Historic Park and help bring California history to life.
