ORGANIZATION: MYLAW: Maryland Youth & the Law

  • 6 people are interested

Youth Volunteers serve as jurors, bailiffs, clerks and jury forepersons. With the exception of an adult judge and courtroom facilitator, youth volunteers run the hearings. Volunteers earn service learning for their time at Teen Court, and it is a fantastic opportunity for young people to hone communication and networking skills.

Mission Statement

MYLAW is building the next generation of civic-minded citizens through unique programs and experiences that hone important life skills, such as communication, critical thinking and problem solving. Through Mock Trial, Law Links, Teen Court, City Council Page Program, Moot Court, and Law Academy, we help prepare youth for college and career pathways. MYLAW is considered the educational arm of the Maryland State Bar Association yet maintains nonprofit 501c3 status

Description

Since its inception in 1999, the MY Baltimore City Teen Court has adjudicated over 2,500 young people through restorative justice practices as an educational and transformative alternative to the traditional "system" of juvenile justice. Since its initiation in 1983, the MY High School Mock Trial Competition has grown from 5 to nearly 150 teams statewide which compete for the 'State Champion" title each year. The MY Law Links Internship program offers rising Baltimore City juniors and seniors paid, seven-week experiences within various legal offices, courts, and organizations; participants are given the chance to learn about legal professions hands-on and add valuable experience to their resume. Other programs that MYLAW offers include the MY Summer Law Academy, MY Moot Court Competition, and MY Baltimore City Council Page Program.
