Join us for the last clean up of Tijuana River Action Month (TRAM) on October 5, 2019 from 9:00am-11:00am at Tijuana Sloughs! Volunteers will join WILDCOAST on the beach to help us clean up the Tijuana River Mouth State Marine Conservation Area/Tijuana River Mouth area! Bring gloves, buckets, and pickers if you have them, otherwise we will have some to loan. This is a nice, flat beach suitable for participants of all ages. Families are encouraged to volunteer together! Volunteer party to follow!

WHY IT MATTERS!

The Tijuana River Mouth State Marine Conservation Area is the southernmost marine protected area (MPA) in California. The MPA is connected with the Tijuana River Estuary, a National Estuarine Research Reserve site. The Estuary and adjacent MPA are home to many endemic and endangered species, including the snowy plover and barred sand bass as well as supporting a persistent kelp bed, surfgrass, and a freshwater plume. The Tijuana River originates in the United States and then flows through Tijuana, Mexico before coming back up into the United States and into the ocean. Unfortunately, due to old infrastructure and lack of proper recycling and trash disposal services, thousands of pounds of trash, including used tires, pollute the river and threaten the species that live there. Additionally, the beach near the river mouth is a popular surf spot and the wide sandy beach is often used by recreational beach-goers. This clean up will get the community involved in cleaning up their own beach, enhancing the recreational value and helping save important habitat and species!
