School can be a place where you learn in and out of the classroom! Daniels Run School has dedicated OVER 5 acres to an outdoor learning space! Daniels Run's outdoor classroom is used by teachers to reinforce and extend learning beyond the traditional classroom instruction.

Their outdoor classroom is comprised of a diverse set of conservation projects. These projects cover over 5 acres and are based upon conservation principals set forth in the Chesapeake Bay 2000 Agreement and follow recognized sustainable landscaping guidelines.
The projects promote environmental education, native plant diversity, wildlife habitat, and protection and improvement of our local waters and the Bay.

In order to accomplish these goals, the conservation areas must be maintained as free as possible of non-native invasive plants, with clearly defined paths and be accessible to students and staff. They must provide a safe place for students to study and enjoy the natural world. We depend entirely on volunteers to accomplish this. With the unusual weather we have been having, this has become an enormous challenge. Help is greatly needed.

The projects form the outdoor classroom and are supported and maintained by students and volunteers. We really need volunteers to assist in:

  • * Removing invasive plants from restored forest areas
  • * Weeding, mulching, planting in the vegetable and literary gardens courtyard
  • * Weeding and mulching in the natural playground

Minimum age 13 but children 6 and up are welcome with an adult.

Mission Statement

Volunteer Fairfax is a private nonprofit organization founded in 1975. For the past 45 years, our mission has been to create a better community through service, to mobilize people and resources to benefit the community and to connect individuals, youth, groups and corporations to volunteer opportunities.

Description

As the regional volunteer center for the National Capital region, Volunteer Fairfax serves the community in a wide variety of ways.

We provide Information and Referral services to community residents interested in volunteering through VolunteerNow. Individuals may also become engaged though a variety of service programs the Center offers including Volunteers for Change, which provides evening and weekend volunteer projects for busy adults; RSVP, a service program that invites people who are 55+ to engage in their community; and, Volunteer Emergency Management Team, a group of volunteers specially trained and prepared to help the community in the event of a disaster. Additionally, for those seeking opportunities to serve court-appointed hours, we have established the Alternative Community Service Program.

Volunteer Fairfax regularly hosts special events and invites youth and families to volunteer together. These volunteer special events include VolunteerFest in October and Give Together in January on the Martin Luther King Day of Service.

Volunteer Fairfax supports both nonprofits and for-profit organizations. To learn more about our services check out our website, www.volunteerfairfax.org.
