Get in, get down, and get dirty for all the right reasons! Come to Huntley Meadows Park to roll up your sleeves and remove some invasive plant species. Huntley is a beautiful 1554 acre park that includes Northern Virginia's largest non-tidal freshwater wetland.

Unfortunately, invasive species are always trying to move in, taking up space and elbowing out native plants and animals. Come to this workday to help support this wildlife preserve and keep the habitat healthy! The workday will involve removing invasive plants like bittersweet and porcelain berry along our entrance road and trails. Work gloves and hand tools will be provided. Please wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes and clothing appropriate for the weather and the work.

The minimum age for volunteering is 15. Children over 13 are welcome with an adult.

Mission Statement

Volunteer Fairfax is a private nonprofit organization founded in 1975. For the past 40 years, our mission has been to create a better community through service, to mobilize people and resources to benefit the community and to connect individuals, youth, groups and corporations to volunteer opportunities.

Description

As the regional volunteer center for the National Capital region, Volunteer Fairfax serves the community in a wide variety of ways.

We provide Information and Referral services to community residents interested in volunteering through VolunteerNow. Individuals may also become engaged though a variety of service programs the Center offers including Volunteers for Change, which provides evening and weekend volunteer projects for busy adults; RSVP, a service program that invites people who are 55+ to engage in their community; and, Volunteer Emergency Management Team, a group of volunteers specially trained and prepared to help the community in the event of a disaster. Additionally, for those seeking opportunities to serve court-appointed hours, we have established the Alternative Community Service Program.

Volunteer Fairfax regularly hosts special events and invites youth and families to volunteer together. These volunteer special events include VolunteerFest in October, Give Together in January on the Martin Luther King Day of Service, and Global Youth Service Day in April

Volunteer Fairfax supports both nonprofits and for-profit organizations. For nonprofits, Volunteer Fairfax offers capacity building training and board development activities. For-profits interested in starting or growing a Corporate Social Responsibility program can be connected to meaningful service projects through our BusinessLink program which also offers project management services.

The highlight of our year is the Fairfax County Volunteer Service Awards held each April, during National Volunteer Week. This is our opportunity, as a center and community, to honor the outstanding volunteers who make our region a better place to live, work and play.

Volunteer Fairfax is actively engaged in Social Media and on the Web, and you will often find us at community fairs and outreach events. We offer media opportunities in print, television and radio. And, we invite the business sector to join us in branding opportunities that are available year-round.
