Have you ever wondered what happens to the fruit that falls off the tree before it is ready to be picked?
Every year 100 billion pounds of food are thrown away in the United States. At the same time, 49 million Americans go hungry. Food for others is working to change both of these statistics. We are looking for gleaning volunteers to help recover excess produce from Hollin Farms, so that we may distribute it to those in need.
There is a whole process called gleaning, it is the act of recovering excess or unwanted produce from local farms. Your project will be to recover the apples that have been knocked to the ground at Hollin's "Pick-Your-Own Orchard". After the apples are recovered, you will load them into bins to be driven to the Food for Others warehouse!

Mission Statement
Volunteer Fairfax is a private nonprofit organization founded in 1975. For the past 45 years, our mission has been to create a better community through service, to mobilize people and resources to benefit the community and to connect individuals, youth, groups and corporations to volunteer opportunities.
Description
As the regional volunteer center for the National Capital region, Volunteer Fairfax serves the community in a wide variety of ways.
We provide Information and Referral services to community residents interested in volunteering through VolunteerNow. Individuals may also become engaged though a variety of service programs the Center offers including Volunteers for Change, which provides evening and weekend volunteer projects for busy adults; RSVP, a service program that invites people who are 55+ to engage in their community; and, Volunteer Emergency Management Team, a group of volunteers specially trained and prepared to help the community in the event of a disaster. Additionally, for those seeking opportunities to serve court-appointed hours, we have established the Alternative Community Service Program.
Volunteer Fairfax regularly hosts special events and invites youth and families to volunteer together. These volunteer special events include VolunteerFest in October and Give Together in January on the Martin Luther King Day of Service.
Volunteer Fairfax supports both nonprofits and for-profit organizations. To learn more about our services check out our website, www.volunteerfairfax.org.
