The Technology Enabled Clinical Improvement (T.E.C.I.) Center is seeking volunteers to assist with a paradigm-shifting surgical data collection opportunity in October 2019! We will be launching "The Surgical Metrics Project" during the 2019 American College of Surgeons (ACS) Clinical Congress in San Francisco. We're a small team with big (data) goals so we need your help!
"The Surgical Metrics Project" aims to capture individual surgeons’ technical approaches and cognitive decision making while performing an open suture repair of a small bowel enterotomy using porcine intestines. To do this, our team will set up 10 data collection stations and recruit surgeons to be instrumented with sensor technology and perform a simulated bowel repair. Each station needs 2 people to operate it effectively - and that’s where you come in!
Volunteers for "The Surgical Metrics Project" will be given interactive tasks that require absolutely no formal medical background. The T.E.C.I. Center team will host training sessions for all volunteers at Stanford Hospital throughout August and September.
TIME COMMITMENT:
Training Session - 4 hour session TBD based on volunteer’s schedule
Data Collection - October 28-30, 2019 from 8:00am-4:30pm (data collection hours are 9:00am-4:30pm)
LOCATION: ACS Clinical Congress Exhibit Hall at theMoscone Center, 747 Howard St, San Francisco, CA 94103, Booth #1625
COMPENSATION: A stipend as well as transportation reimbursement will be provided to all volunteers. Volunteers will also be provided with t-shirts.
If you are interested in this unique volunteering opportunity, please contact Anna Witt at annawitt@stanford.edu. From there, a member of the T.E.C.I. Center research team will contact you with more details.
Thank you for your consideration!

Description
The Technology Enabled Clinical Improvement Center (T.E.C.I. Center), is a new Stanford Medicine entity (formed March 1, 2018). The center is directed by Carla M. Pugh, MD, PhD, FACS, an internationally recognized surgeon scientist who has received numerous medical and engineering awards for her research on the use of sensors to quantify hands-on clinical skills.
The research and technology development conducted in the T.E.C.I. Center has revealed previously unknown performance metrics regarding mastery in surgical operations and bedside procedures. The T.E.C.I. Center team aims to transform human health and welfare through advances in sensor technology at the point of care supported by data science and personalized, data-driven performance metrics for healthcare providers.
