POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Farmers Market Recovery Program Volunteer Driver is responsible for restocking our storages for market gleans, transporting produce to hunger relief agencies that do not have the capacity to pick-up, and delivering necessary gleaning equipment to volunteers. The Volunteer Driver is required to have a clean driving record and be able to comfortably lift boxes of produce weighing 40-50 pounds each, frequently in large numbers. A driver with their own vehicle is preferred, but the option to use a transit vehicle which is located in North Hollywood is available.
The Volunteer Driver responsibilities are as follows:
(+) Picking up full boxes of gleaned produce from farmers markets and transporting them to hunger relief agencies (i.e., food pantries/banks, senior centers, homeless shelters) located within a 1-10 mile radius
(+) Restocking different market storages (most are on-site at the market) with boxes and any other necessary gleaning materials (markers, aprons, etc.)
(+) Dropping off necessary gleaning equipment to volunteer event leaders including boxes, keys to storage, etc.
HOURS: ~30-90 minutes, 1-4 times per month as needed. Availability on Saturdays and Sundays a plus, but weekdays are also helpful.
COMPENSATION: This position is an unpaid volunteer position
FARMERS MARKET RECOVERY PROGRAM OVERVIEW: Farmers Market Recovery Program began in 2012 and administers a volunteer-based, systematized collection of produce that would otherwise go to waste from farmers at the end of markets. Of the produce gleaned, 100% of is donated to hunger relief agencies serving those in need within 5 to 10 miles of the market. To date, the FMR program has collected over 3.2 million pounds of fresh produce! For each market, we’ve received the support of the Market Manager, vetted local receiving agencies and developed relationships with farmers. We currently collect produce at 25 markets across Southern California
Drivers are needed in the following communities: San Fernando Valley, South Bay, San Gabriel Valley, Westside
