Looking for an unusual, hands-on opportunity? Like to dive right into experiences?

Get involved with a high energy project at a Buddhist center for 6 months, while living and learning in a community setting. Help build and landscape an outdoors space with sacred symbols, waterfalls, and a plaza for dancing, meditation, yoga and more. You’ll gain experience contributing as part of a small but experienced construction team, as well as get to see all stages of this project come to life.

As part of this work-study program, you will live in a beautiful environment that is also a meditation and Tibetan yoga center with a breathtaking view of the Golden Gate Bridge and more. Vegetarian meals are provided on site, created from fresh ingredients that are organic whenever possible.

We are a Buddhist center with a welcoming orientation; open to those seeking meaningful ways of working and living. No need to be Buddhist, but the ideal volunteer is open-minded, self-reflective and ready to engage deeply on both internally and with the work. Classes are free for our full-time work-study participants. There is also opportunity to participate in workshops and retreats.

This program includes:
  • Housing in a beautiful, serene setting in Berkeley
  • Vegetarian meals
  • Free classes
  • A unique community living and working experience
  • A stipend of $250 per month for basic living expenses
Spots are available on a rolling basis; early applications have a better chance of acceptance. You can visit our website to learn more and download the application. Please get in touch if you’d like to chat about the program!

Not a good fit for a construction project? We’re also seeking applicants with other backgrounds. Areas of interest include bookkeeping, administration, IT, marketing, fundraising, and other skills related to non-profits.

About Nyingma Institute

Location:

1815 HIGHLAND PL, BERKELEY, CA 94709, US

Mission Statement

Our mission is to share the healing wisdom of the Nyingma tradition and reveal a path of inner freedom.

Description

The Nyingma Institute offers courses, workshops and retreats to the public. With a focus on developing wellness, our joyful, affirmative approach to meditation, Tibetan yoga, and self-knowledge fosters the development of the whole individual - body, mind, and senses. We have seven fields of study, including Meditation, Kum Nye Tibetan Yoga, Nyingma Psychology, and more.

Nyingma Institute is one of the oldest schools of Tibetan Buddhism in the west, founded by Tarthang Tulku Rinpoche in 1972. The Institute’s staff, faculty, and residents are all volunteers. Volunteering is an act of generosity, a path of practice, and a means to nurture enlightened community.
