The University District Food Bank seeks volunteers to assist in recovering grocery donations from the NE Seattle neighborhood. Volunteers will support our grocery rescue program by riding along in the truck to pick up food donations from local grocery stores and returning them to the food bank. Volunteers will assist with checking in with departments at local grocery stores, repacking items and unloading donations at the food bank which will then be sorted and distributed to community members.
Volunteers must be able to lift at least 50 lbs. Our most needed shift coverage is Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8am-12pm.
The University District Food Bank relies on recovered food to stock our free grocery store and Grocery Rescue Volunteers are essential to getting that food to our customers quickly and efficiently.
Interested in joining our team? Please email hannah@udistrictfoodbank.org or call (206) 523-7060x706 to get started!

Mission Statement
The University District Food Bank's mission is to build a hunger-free Northeast Seattle by providing our neighbors with reliable access to healthy food and life-changing resources.
Description
Every week about 1300 families receive groceries from the University District Food Bank. Our clients include working adults, infants, children, underemployed, unemployed, seniors, disabled people, and the homeless. With the help of over 150 volunteers, giving over 250 hours a week, we distribute about 3 million pounds of food to families in Northeast Seattle.
History:
On May 4 th 1983, University District Food Bank opened its doors for the first time. A donated home refrigerator provided enough storage space for the perishable items we had on-hand. Our first year’s budget allowed $100 per month to purchase food to supplement what was donated. We served approximately 200 bags of groceries per week. By 1984, this number doubled, and in 1986, we were the 5 th busiest food bank in Seattle. Currently, we are the 3 rd or 4 th busiest food bank in the city from the perspective of total household visits each month.
