Seeking an enthusiastic, physically fit person to assist the Gunpowder Valley Conservancy (GVC), a non-profit land trust and conservation organization located in Baltimore metropolitan area. The intern will assist GVC staff with our Clear Creeks Project, a bay-wise education and motivation campaign in the Middle River, Tidal Gunpowder, Bird River, and Lower Gunpowder Falls Watersheds where communities are being educated on the negative impact of stormwater runoff on local streams and our Chesapeake Bay. The goal is to motivate property owners to make lasting behavior changes by implementing storm water best management/Bay friendly yard practices, such as replacing lawns with native plants called Bayscaping, and redirecting downspouts to rain barrels and rain gardens. Tree plantings and stream clean ups will also be conducted. For more information about the Clear Creeks Project, visit gunpowdervalleyconservancy.org/clearcreeks.

The GVC Intern selected will also assist with forest stewardship activities, such as trail maintenance, invasive plant removal, and tree maintenance.

Benefits to Intern: Intern will obtain valuable skills and knowledge in watershed restoration during 344 hours over one year of hands on learning experiences.

Duties: Assist Project leaders during tree plantings, tree maintenance, trail maintenance and invasive plant removal, installations of rain barrels, stream clean ups, and garden installations. Assist with administrative tasks, conducting surveys at workshops, and other tasks as needed.

Time commitment: One year internship. Must provide average of 8.5 hours per week. Position starts September 2019 through June 2020. Saturday work hours 9 am - 2 pm expected during project workshops and GVC events.

Minimum Requirement: ▪ age 18+ ▪ Must be able to work Saturdays, some Sundays, and some weekdays
▪ high school graduate interested in restoring and protecting our natural environment, and desire to experience hands on learning skills in watershed restoration activities (mentioned above) ▪ must provide own transportation ▪ able to lift up to 40 lbs ▪ willing to work outside in open fields and in rain, shine, heat or cold ▪ good interpersonal skills

The ideal candidate will have: Minimum of 1 year college level completed courses, working towards degree in environmental field or related area, (ie. environmental science, biology, ecology, botany, or natural history).

Compensation: $10.10 per hour.

Get your hands dirty for clean water! GVC needs volunteers like YOU to achieve our vision of healthy lands, healthy waterways, and healthy communities within the Gunpowder Watershed. We work with volunteers of all ages, as well as individuals, families, or groups. Our volunteer opportunities are eligible for community service learning hours.

Join us for a meaningful environmental stewardship activity such as tree planting, tree maintenance (removing invasive plants), or stream clean-up.
