We are looking for a volunteer to come in and teach a class on Tuesday nights from 5:30 to 6:30 to some of our residents children while the parents are attending a mandatory life skills class. The class can be anything that could be accommodating to multiple age groups and engaging to all. We have a very active group of children so any type of activity based class would go well here. We are also looking for individuals who are able to "chaperone" once or twice a week during the life skill classes on Tuesday 5:30-6:30 pm or Thursday 5:00-6:00pm. We have a limited staff here and could use the extra support with some of the children who come to the office to wait for their parents during the classes.

Mission Statement

Westwood Transitional Village (WTV) provides quality housing and extensive social, educational and healthcare services to homeless families, many of whom are Veterans. While here the Families acquire skills they need to transition from homelessness to independent living and employment. It is the goal of the Village to help families transition from homelessness to independent living through individual case management, working with a housing navigator, life skill and parenting classes, counseling and educational/employment placement support. A vast referral network offering legal, financial, governmental and housing and childcare services will be available to all participants as well. Successful partnerships with community groups provide added resources as well.

Description

The Westwood Transitional Village is a 40 unit residential housing facility that provides support services for homeless families. Families can live here for a designated amount of time while they stabilize and acquire the skills needed for independent living. Approximately 150 individuals live at The Village at all times; with families of veterans making up forty percent of the residential population, and two thirds of the total population being children. We provide weekly life skill classes for our clients to help them better deal with challenges in everyday life. We also provide classes for the children residing here including, art, dance and homework help.
