Purpose: Provides social engagement opportunities for adolescent, teens and young adults with special needs, in a safe and inclusive environment.
Location: Stillwater, and surrounding areas.
Activity Areas: Recreation, Youth Development and/or Human Services, working with students with disabilities.
Commitment: Varies month to month : Mostly Saturday or/and late afternoons.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Provide a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment for individuals with special needs.
- Identify and support teaching opportunities for members, so that they may enhance their social skills.
- Encourage, with respect for individual needs, members to engage with each other, and experience new things.
- Have a willingness to get to know each member personally, through the development of appropriate, interest-based friendships.
- Embody a person-first attitude with regards to individuals with special needs.
- Have fun!! This is a social activities club after all, and our volunteers must be ready to participate in outing activities, joke and be silly.
Other Notes:
Our members are awesome people looking for ways to experience all that life has to offer, and as such we’re recruiting a pool of volunteers who generally have weekend availability, and whom can be called upon (in advance) to accompany our members to events including nature hikes, bowling, bison carriage rides, etc. VFC welcomes any and all excursion ideas to share with our members, but don’t feel any pressure to come with an idea, our members are just excited to make new friends!
Additional Requirements :
Almost anyone is able to volunteer! If you can be counted on to be on time and present, to play and engage with respect of person and boundaries, then you can volunteer. Unaccompanied volunteers must be at least 15 years old, but younger children are welcome with an adult. All over 18 must have a background ck completed at Valley Friendship Club’s expense.
