Parameters of VOLUNTEER POSITION
Help us preserve our heritage! Second Harvest of Silicon Valley seeks someone who has an archivist or library background and who knows the importance of capturing an organization’s history. We are looking for a volunteer who can take the lead in helping us create and build, organize, and launch a digital media archive of photographs, video, press coverage, collateral, and other materials dating back more than 40 years. Possible position for a student intern.
This is an opportunity to be a part of Second Harvest’s vision to end hunger. We hope to find a talented and enthusiastic individual who will advise and work with our small but dedicated heritage team to preserve our past as we evolve into an exciting and dynamic new era.
This job is for you if you:
- Value history and saving the past for future generations
- Have interest and experience in archiving and structuring a digital media archive from the ground up
- Are excited about establishing a retrospective catalog of Second Harvest’s rich history
- Enjoy product photography
- Want use this experience to further a career in museums, libraries, educational institutions and the non-profit sector
Skills:
Highly organized
Excellent verbal/written communication
Product photography--may not be necessary if we fill a volunteer position for a photographer
Flexible
Willing to learn new tools and software
REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum 3-6 month commitment
At least 5-15 hours per week.
Interest in and knowledge of archival methods
Technical fluency of Microsoft Windows OS
Problem solving and research skills to address standard and non-standard work problems
Knowledge of Libris, a digital asset management software tool, or willingness to learn
Ability to travel between our two San Jose sites and our San Carlos sites, if necessary.

Second Harvest of Silicon Valley is a private non-profit organization that collects and distributes more than 12 million pounds of food each month. We currently serve an average of over 500,000 individuals each month; 60% are low income families and 20% are seniors. By building collaborative networks, we efficiently distribute food by leveraging donations of money, food and human resources. But we cannot do it alone.
