We are looking for volunteers to help doorknock, flyer, and make reminder calls to renters around Austin during the week before and the week of State of the Renter! We especially looking for volunteers who speak Spanish or Vietnamese, but everyone is welcome and encouraged to join us!
The affordable housing crisis forces Austin renters to put up with unhealthy housing -- bad building conditions, landlord bullying, and the ever-present threat of eviction or lease nonrenewal. Renters make up 55% of Austin households so now is the time for renters, city officials, and allies to elevate these pressing issues. State of the Renter is a series of forums bringing together Austinites to direct our collective attention to the lived experiences of renters and the impact that unhealthy housing has on them. BASTA is a non-profit project dedicated to helping Austin renters work with their neighbors to improve conditions in their homes and communities. We envision a future where the collective action of Austin renters has brought healthy and affordable housing to all.
Description
BASTA is a project of Texas RioGrande Legal Aid. We work with diverse groups of low-income renters across Austin to form tenant associations, get repairs made to substandard conditions and educate renters about their rights. We are committed to language justice and to providing information and assistance to renters regardless of their primary language.
