The aim of IRCO’s Refugee and Immigrant Student Empowerment (RISE) program is to engage and empower immigrant and refugee high school students at Oregon’s largest high school, David Douglas, through a culturally responsive after school program. RISE provides both academic and social support to increase participants’ likelihood of social integration, academic success, graduation and the pursuit of college and career opportunities. We need volunteer tutors to help students with their homework, participate in opening activities and be a part of our community! See a more descriptive explanation of what we do below!

RISE is Mon-Fri from 2:30-5:00pm and provides several services and activities for the students who attend, such as:

Homework Club (Mon-Thurs), provides assistance with homework & skill building, with a particular focus on English language learning & learning strategies. Volunteer tutors work with students both one on one and in groups to ensure that the tutoring is tailored to each student’s strengths and deficiencies. Each homework club session also includes a group activity aimed at increasing self-confidence, English conversation skills while creating group cohesion and community.

Conversation Club (once a week), A variety of group activities and discussions are planned each week and adapted for varying levels of English competency. Through games, activities and discussions, students not only increase their confidence speaking in English, but also form meaningful friendships that provide a source of support through their integration into the school system.

Friday Workshops (every other Fri), RISE hosts bi-weekly workshops aimed at increasing student’s access to social and emotional wellness as well as college and career preparedness. RISE staff creates curriculum, seeks volunteer guest speakers, and hosts workshops on various topics. Workshops are open to all RISE students as attendees and volunteers as participants, facilitators or guests.
