LCCR is looking for 1-2 Spanish-speaking volunteers to support our highly-in-demand asylum program. Days and hours are flexible between Monday and Friday (anytime 9am-5pm), but we hope to find volunteers able to commit to 4 or more hours per week. Volunteers will help respond to phone and e-mail inquiries from potential clients and assist staff in inputting this information into our database. Interested individuals must adhere to a strict confidentiality policy. Thank you for your interest!
Since 1983, the Asylum Program has provided legal representation for refugees who have escaped persecution and torture in their native countries by bridging the gap between the Bay Area’s private bar and financially distressed asylum seekers. As part of a vibrant network of local community organizations, the Lawyers’ Committee is regularly contacted by asylum seekers who have suffered persecution but are unable to afford attorneys to assist them in navigating the confusing and oppressive immigration process. The Program interviews these clients to evaluate their claims and assess the most advantageous course of action. If it is determined that we can assist them, clients are placed with pro bono attorneys from leading law firms and receive top-notch representation. Through this system, thousands of immigrants have been matched with stellar advocates and have secured asylum in the United States with their assistance.

Mission Statement
Founded in 1968, the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area (LCCR) advances, protects and promotes the legal rights of communities of color, low-income people, immigrants and refugees in California.
Description
Formed to provide legal support to the Civil Rights Movement, our attorney network provides free legal representation to communities on the front lines of social justice struggles, including asylum seekers, unhoused people, and Californians impacted by predatory bail industry contracts. These direct legal services inform the broader impact litigation and policy advocacy we undertake:
Immigrant Justice:
Our Asylum Program, now in its 36th year, has represented thousands of refugees. We are currently litigating against inhumane conditions on the U.S.-Mexico border.
Racial Justice:
We work to end the criminalization of poverty, including the over-policing of communities of color and unconstitutional seizure of property from unhoused people. Last fall, we won repeal of an unconstitutional loitering ordinance that disproportionately harmed Oakland’s Black public housing residents.
Economic Justice:
Our Legal Services for Entrepreneurs Program provides transactional legal assistance to start-ups and small businesses at risk of displacement in low-income communities of color. We seek to change legal and business landscapes through policy interventions and establishment of alternative business models including public banks, commercial land trusts, and small-business purchasing cooperatives.
We have constant need for pro bono attorneys, volunteer interpreters, and volunteers willing to help with data entry and administrative support. Please join us today!
