Traditions Health of Newport News, d.b.a. Hospice Community Care has been experiencing remarkable growth in the Hampton Roads, Virginia Beach and Chesapeake. Hospice Community Care is in need of Pet Therapy Volunteers. This unique volunteer opportunity is only open for dogs who have evidence of therapy dog training and their handlers.

As a pet therapy handler along with your dog, you will visit our patients in whatever setting the patient or patient's caregiver calls home. You and your dog may visit a patient's house or apartment or room in an assisted living facility or a nursing home. Many times patient's dogs have had to be re-homed due to the patient's inability to care for their pet. Sometimes, the patient's dog has died and is missed terribly by the patient. As the owner of a pet therapy dog, you know there is no other companionship that can compare to that of a dog's companionship. A dog loves unconditionally with an uncanny ability to see past a patient's illness to bring joy to a patient.

Have we piqued your interest? Do you want to see your therapy dog helping a hospice patient have as good a day as possible even though the patient is terminally ill?

The following are the steps you will need to follow to get involved with Hospice Community Care as a pet therapy handler along with your pet therapy dog.

Please respond through this Volunteer Match ad.

You will need to provide proof that your dog is a certified therapy dog, as well as provide your dog's current license and shot records. As the dog's handler, you will need to be a licensed driver with current auto insurance. You must be 18 years of age and you cannot have any DUI convictions on your driving record. We will train you regarding all you need to know for you and your therapy dog to provide the warmth, love and comfort that only a certified pet therapy dog can bring. You will need a TB test paid for by our company and you will need to submit to a background check for which we pay.

Your training will take place in Newport News but you will be assigned to the area where you will be most comfortable. During your training, you will learn about hospice and you will learn about Covid-19. You will need to observe all CDC guidelines for Covid-19 while visiting our office or your patient.
