Join Friends of the Mississippi River (FMR), Flint Hills Resources and Great River Greening as we return to the Flint Hills property within the Pine Bend Bluffs Natural Area along the Mississippi River - one of the largest and most diverse native ecosystems left in the metro area! The site is only accessible to the public for special occasions like this annual restoration and celebration event. Join us for a chance to see it for yourself on Saturday, October 26, 9 a.m.-noon.

Working with FMR and Great River Greening ecologists and staff, volunteers will help protect these native plant communities by removing invasive species, primarily helping to stack pre-cut buckthorn brush, and assisting with other restoration tasks as needed. All tools and supplies will be provided, including coffee, morning snacks and a hot lunch to conclude the event!

As always, all are welcome and encouraged to work at their own comfort level. However, due to the nature of the work on this site volunteers must be 15 years of age or older. You will need to individually register each person in your party, including full name, address and phone number. Learn more and register at

Mission Statement

Friends of the Mississippi River (FMR) advocates a new vision for the Mississippi, especially the river and its watershed in the Twin Cities metropolitan area. Through active leadership and education, Friends seeks to preserve and restore the river's fish and wildlife, its vital floodplains and scenic bluffs, its natural and cultural treasures, its beauty and its romance. We envision a river on which small boats are safe and welcome, to which we have clear and easy access and in which we can safely swim and fish. We envision a river that is cleaner, healthier, more alive and more inviting, a river no one can ignore or take for granted.

Friends of the Mississippi River works to protect and enhance the Mississippi River and its watershed in the Twin Cities metro area.

We are proud to work with roughly 3,000 volunteers a year. We keep volunteering simple, fun and satisfying -- there are no applications, and you can sign up for one event or several. We list events that are especially in need of volunteers here on, but maintain a full calendar of 60+ events a year at

Our project work includes conservation and restoration of natural areas and habitat, education on watershed protection issues, and organizing activities that connect the public to the Mississippi River.
