The Sun Prairie Museum is in need of volunteers to make all kinds of wonderful things happen! The museum needs:

· Museum Docents: greet visitors and walk them through the exhibit if they wish; keep an eye on the collection as well

· Walking Tour Guides: give walking tours of downtown in teams of two

· Reference Volunteers: research requests from the public and researchers

· School Tour Volunteers: give educational tours to visiting schools

· Program Volunteers (regular programs): Farmers’ Market events with children’s activities; greet visitors at lectures; be in the museum to answer questions on open house days; hospitality assistance with pouring lemonade and refilling food plates, etc.

· Special Event Volunteers (Christmas Tree Lighting, BID events, etc.)

· Collections Volunteers: assist with accessioning objects into the collection; researching objects donated; photograph and document objects during inventory process

Mission Statement

The mission of the Sun Prairie Historical Library and Museum is: A. The preservation and interpretation of the history of Sun Prairie and the surrounding area in order to effectuate a community which understands and has pride in its roots to the past. B. The preservation of written records, photographic records, artifacts, and the documentation of the physical landscape changed by the history of settlement. C. The collection, preservation, maintenance, interpretation, and display of historical collections of the development of city government, surrounding townships and daily life of the citizens of Sun Prairie to the community, in order to promote awareness and understanding of the rich history and heritage of the area. D. Connecting the community with its historical roots through outreach exhibits, community and school programs, tours, and displays.

Description

The City of Sun Prairie Historical Library and Museum is housed in a 1924 red brick building located at 115 E. Main Street in Downtown Sun Prairie. It serves the community as the headquarters of the Museum. Past uses of the building include the City Library, City Offices, the Original site of the Colonial Club Senior Center, the Village Council Chambers, and a World War II Red Cross Center.
The Sun Prairie Historical Library and Museum offers a variety of services and programs to the community and visitors from out of town. With a collection of over 30,000 artifacts, researchers can pursue a wide variety of topics in their historical research. The Museum also offers several exhibits on Sun Prairie History and life in Wisconsin. Programs are offered in conjunction with these exhibits. The Museum is in its 50th year and is looking for volunteers to help share the community history and also explore relevant topics on the world today in which we live.
