Position Title: Youth Program Volunteer

Reports to: Youth Director

Status: Part-Time (8-10hr/wk), Volunteer - opportunities for school/course credit

Location: 1609 Havana St. Aurora, Colorado 80010

The Village Exchange Center is a non-profit organization formed to serve immigrants and refugees in the Aurora/Denver metro area. As a community center and multi-faith worship space it seeks to celebrate cultural and religious diversity by creating an inclusive environment where different communities interact, share and develop together. Through organic and collocated programs, informational services and cultural activities, the center is a "one stop shop" supporting integration, engagement and empowerment of newly arrived communities.

Afterschool Internship: Our free after-school program, Village Youth Club, provides a safe place for middle school-aged youth to develop new friendships, receive homework help and tutoring, and participate in exciting activities. As an intern you will be working directly with diverse youth, many of whom are part of the foreign-born community and benefit from direct support and guidance. The program runs during the school year Monday through Thursday from 3:30 to 6pm.

Qualifications

  • Energetic, patient and have the passion to make a difference in a person’s life
  • Desire to teach youth new skills.
  • Have experience working with youth in any capacity and love to have fun!
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills: spoken and written.
  • Currently in an undergraduate program (Preferred: Currently in a graduate program)
  • Ability to pass a background check
  • Possess a driver's license, clean driving record, and reliable transportation.
  • Bilingual preferred but not required.

Core responsibilities:

  • Ensuring safety of middle-school aged youth
  • Assisting with programming, field trips, and tutoring
  • Data tracking for youth, emergency contacts, and attendance
  • Implement individualized programs for youth in an organized fashion
  • Manage inappropriate behaviors that occur in a respectful but firm manor
  • Collect data using a tablet to manage the child's progress.
  • Facilitate interactions with peers and families
  • Keep the children motivated to learn through positive reinforcement.
  • Need to be available at a minimum 3 of the 4 program days (Monday - Thursday) for the full program time (3:30 - 6)
  • Have access to a working cell phone and transportation.

Description

The Village Exchange Center began as a concept in early 2016 when the faith community of St. Matthew Lutheran Church considered ways to be responsive to and serve its neighborhood, Aurora, and the wider community. The city of Aurora is among an increasing number of cities across the U.S. grappling with realities of integration with multiple cultures and communities of immigrants and refugees. The Village Exchange Center promotes and provides programs that support these communities.
