Give children with serious medical conditions a Camp experience they’ll always remember!
Every child deserves to experience the life-changing power of camp. The Painted Turtle provides year-round camp experiences for children with serious medical conditions. Located in Lake Hughes, California, The Painted Turtle is a proud member of the global SeriousFun Children’s Network, founded by Paul Newman. Every aspect of the intentional and adaptive programming at Camp-from a wheelchair-friendly ropes course to exceptional on-site medical care-is designed to allow all campers to participate in all activities. Since opening in 2004, over 60,000 children and their families have attended The Painted Turtle completely free of charge.
We are looking for volunteers for our Family Weekends over several dates in the Fall season, where the whole family of the child with the medical condition get to come to camp together. Volunteers work directly with our campers and families to facilitate the joy of camp and bring smiles to their faces while cheering them on in activities such as horseback riding, archery, boating, fishing, arts and crafts, woodshop, and so much more! We provide food, housing, and transportation from LAX for volunteers--so all you have to worry about is having fun with your campers and families!

About The Painted Turtle
1300 4th St., Suite 300, Santa Monica, CA 90401, US
The mission of The Painted Turtle is to provide a year-round, life-changing environment and authentic camp experience for children with chronic and life-threatening illnesses. The Painted Turtle supports children’s medical needs, inspires them to reach beyond their illnesses, and provides care, education, and respite for their families. All campers and families attend completely free of charge. Campers at The Painted Turtle enjoy a fun, safe, and adaptive environment where all activities are designed to accommodate campers with medical concerns. At Camp, children are empowered to learn about their own medical care and are given the confidence to become more independent. Each session is grouped by similar diagnoses, where campers are surrounded by others who can understand their challenges. The community at Camp transcends the days that campers spend there, leading to friendships that create a feeling of inclusion and connection outside of Camp.
The Painted Turtle is more than a camp - it’s a place where children with serious medical conditions can just be kids.
Children with chronic and life-threatening illnesses arrive looking for a typical camp experience, and what they discover is confidence, belonging, and a feeling of acceptance that lasts long after they head home. For many campers, their camp experience is the best time of the year. For their families, The Painted Turtle provides unparalleled care, education, and well-needed respite. All programs are always completely free of charge.
Since opening in 2004, The Painted Turtle has provided more than 60,000 camp experiences to children with serious medical conditions and family members through year-round camp programming. As a member of the SeriousFun Children’s Network founded by Paul Newman, The Painted Turtle is part of a network of the finest multi-disease medical camps and programs - serving hundreds of thousands of children and families around the globe.
