Kirtland Temple Historic Site

  • 2 people are interested

Nestled in the charming hills of northeast Ohio, Kirtland Temple was the first temple built by the Latter Day Saints, today owned and operated by Community of Christ.

Volunteers at the Kirtland Temple Historic Site serve as greeters, interpreters, gardeners, student mentors, and assist with general housekeeping. Volunteers of all ages and backgrounds are welcome.

Those who are excited about sharing history and meeting new people volunteer as historic interpreters. Garden enthusiasts are welcome to dive into the gardens during the peak season of April through October each year. A variety of volunteers find a home at the Visitor Center assisting in the museum store, greeting visitors, and managing group reservations. Finally, volunteers are welcome to assist in the research, care, and management of the library and artifact collections. Our enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers are the backbone of our success.

If you don't live locally, housing may be available for those who can serve. We usually ask for a commitment of 6 weeks or more.

Mission Statement

It is our Mission to Preserve the Kirtland Temple--the first Latter Day Saint Temple built in 1836, which today is a National Historic Landmark--and to Share the story of the 1830s community that built it with over 30,000 visitors each year.

Dedicated in 1836 as a House of Prayer, Learning, and Order; the Kirtland Temple today is a National Historic Landmark where visitors still come to pray and worship, as well as learn about the history and appreciate the architecture of this unparalleled structure.
Our staff is largely composed of volunteers who give tours, tend the gardens, provide maintenance, and work in our museum store. We strive to provide the very best experience and interpretation for our guests.
