Volunteer Services (VS), a program with Catholic Community Services, uses volunteer help to meet the requested essential needs of independently living low-income seniors and adults with disabilities throughout Lewis, Mason, and Thurston counties. VS operates two small firewood banks to supply clients who use firewood as a source of heat access to emergency loads of wood during cold months. Part of keeping our firewood banks replete with adequate amounts of firewood to meet client needs, we must continuously plan on harvesting firewood. The program is in need of committed volunteers who have their own chainsaws (and can safely use them!) to help cut up downed trees that are about a foot in circumference at our current harvesting site in Tenino. The wood would ideally be cut into firewood size pieces, particularly because many of the Volunteer Services clients cannot pick up large pieces of wood for health and mobility reasons. The wood could either be left for another volunteer to haul away to a wood bank, or it could be hauled by the volunteer who cut it up to the wood bank when they are finished. The area is beautiful, wood is light and dry, and driving a truck to park next to the patch of woods is accessible. Harvesting wood can happen as a volunteer is available, and times are extremely flexible. Helping cut up wood once a month could make all the difference in keeping our wood banks at a proper capacity to meet client need. Volunteer Services also reimburses volunteers for any mileage to/from a volunteer site, and has an extended liability insurance that all volunteers are covered by through Catholic Community Services.
Give the gift of heat to a senior in need this winter season!

About Catholic Community Services' Volunteer Services

Location:

3545 7th ave SW, STE t-004, Olympia, WA 98502, US

Mission Statement

We believe every child should grow up in a safe, loving and nurturing environment We believe the elderly should be able to live with security and dignity. We believe healthy family life should be affirmed and supported in our communities We believe in compassion, love and respect for all people, especially the poor and most vulnerable. We believe in joining with others to change systems that oppress, discriminate or otherwise cause human suffering. We believe employees and volunteers should work in an environment that fosters respect, teamwork and excellence. We believe in all of these things for all people, whatever their color, whatever language they speak or however they worship.

Description

Our program exists as a safety net for low-income elders and people with disabilities (also low-income)by providing them with services that allow them to remain living as independently as possible in their own homes (not assisted living). For example, a 89 year old woman who only collects $600/mo. in Social Security needs help with her lawn. She can't afford to pay someone, and if her lawn goes a couple of months without being mowed, now the lawn is a fire hazard.
