Join us from 6:30pm to 6:55pm to learn more about becoming a volunteer tutor with Healthy Cities Tutoring! This session will go over the basics of our efforts providing tutoring and mentoring for students who find school a challenge. Tutors are asked to volunteer once a week for one hour to help a child in need. We help children in kindergarten through eighth grade at schools in San Carlos and Redwood City. No prior tutoring experience is needed.

Join us following the information session from 7pm to 8:15pm for a Workshop on "Tutor Tips" which will be led by two second grade teachers. They will provide strategies to work with the reluctant reader/writer plus teach fun math games to help students learn basic math facts. Share your successes in tutoring and get your questions answered about tutoring challenges.

Mission Statement

Healthy Cities Tutoring helps kids who struggle to succeed in school. Community volunteers provide one-on-one tutoring and mentoring for children to improve their academic success, engagement in learning and self-esteem.

Description

Healthy Cities Tutoring is a volunteer-based tutoring program that currently supports students in kindergarten through eighth grade in thirteen public schools in San Carlos and Redwood City. The mission of the organization is to help kids who struggle to succeed in school. Community volunteers provide one-on-one tutoring and mentoring for children to improve their academic success, engagement in learning and self-esteem. The services are provided at no cost to the families who have children enrolled.

It is our goal to serve every student in need and ensure that every child referred to us for services receives a tutor. We are working to serve more of the students on our waiting lists and reach more of the students who are below grade level in our schools.

The tutor and student meet once a week for an hour. This is a one-on-one relationship where child has his or her "own" special tutor. The tutor and student work on reading, math, study skills and homework depending on the student’s needs.

With COVID all tutoring has moved online via the computer for the 2020-2021 school year.
