The Old Manse sits near the banks of the Concord River among rolling fields edged by centuries-old stone walls and graced by an orchard. From upstairs, you can look out over the North Bridge, where the famous battle of April 19, 1775, took place. Ralph Waldo Emerson and Nathaniel Hawthorne both called the Manse home for a time - and each found inspiration here. Emerson would draft his famous essay "Nature" from an upstairs room, and Hawthorne would write a tribute to the homestead called Mosses from an Old Manse.

The Trustees and TigerLion Arts present Nature, the mythic telling of Emerson and Thoreau’s mutual love affair with the natural world. Grounded in the story of their friendship, this virtuosic production offers a perspective on their lives that is strikingly relevant, richly complex, and yet utterly simple. Nature is performed outdoors as a "walking play." A professional ensemble of actors takes the audience on a journey through the natural environment as scenes unfold around them. Bagpipes, ancient flutes, drums and rich choral arrangements are intricately woven into the experience.

Be a part of this special performance! Performances run from September 13 through September 29. Volunteers will serve in a variety of roles including house attendants, parking crew, wayfinding and check-in. There are also opportunities to host cast members in home stays during the performance run. As a volunteer you'll have the chance to experience this amazing performance and give visitors an equally amazing experience.

Nature Event Volunteers:
Volunteers are needed for each performance. Roles will be assigned after you sign up.

Event Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

• Meet and greet visitors
• Educate the public about the goals of the Trustees and the benefits of being a Trustees’ member
• Assist with set up and clean up
• Sign-up for your available days

• Desire to meet with the public, and share knowledge of The Trustees
• Good communication skills
• Dress in appropriate clothes and footwear for varying weather conditions
• Experience working with the public (desired, not required)
