Interns in the Park Forest Archive Office
Two graduate Library School interns work on projects in the Archive Office.

The Park Forest Local History Collection and Archive is housed St. Mary's Catholic Church, 227 Monee Road, and is open Friday 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., and by appointment. Volunteers work at other times during the week. The society is seeking volunteers for special projects including fundraising, publicity, and work on the archival collection. Projects include scanning photographs and documents, and numbering, data entry and website updating. There is also a need for trimming, photocopying and labeling articles and documents and filing them in the Local History Files.

The archivist will be training selected volunteers to search answers to questions.

Publicity volunteers could design or distribute fliers, Blog and submit content on social media sites. Volunteers who use Twitter, can do podcasts, or are familiar with goecaching are needed. The Society is also interested in interviewing people for service on the Board of Directors.

Description

The Park Forest Historical Society operates the Park Forest Local History Collection and Archive and the 1950s Park Forest House Museum. Park Forest is the first fully-planned post-World War II suburb, America's Original GI Town. PFHS was established in 1985, the archive has existed since 1981 and the museum since 1998

REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be at least 15
  • Orientation or Training
  • Volunteers are expected to work 2-3 hour shifts. Day and time is usually mid-day, weekdays. We offer some flexibility in what days we work, depending on availability of the Archivist or someone who can supervise a task.
  • Volunteers should have good handwriting as well as typing abilities. They should be punctual and must let us know if they are not coming in at a scheduled time.
