Help a child learn to read? It's as easy as A-B-C! Become a Reading Buddy to be paired with a kindergarten student at Jesse Bobo or Lone Oak Elementary. We'll provide the training; no tutoring experience required.
Volunteers will meet with their student once a week for 30 minutes from Sept - Dec 2020. Volunteers will work in teams of 3, so that each student receives 3 Reading Buddy sessions each week.
Jesse Bobo & Lone Oak are two of the highest-poverty elementary schools in Spartanburg County, but they are making great strides to improve the educational outcomes of students. Unfortunately, the loss of in-school learning time in 2020 due to coronavirus means that more students will need intensive reading intervention.
Both schools are part of United Way of the Piedmont and Spartanburg Academic Movement's Continuous Improvement program, which provides intensive training to school staff and has been shown to support higher student outcomes. You'll learn the basics of that methodology and be part of the team providing reading intervention services to the students most in need of help.
A background check is required for this role and training is provided.
You can help break the cycle of poverty by making sure children have a great start to their academic career!
