The Read2Me Tutor is a volunteer position that is dedicated to Tacoma Community House’s mission of creating opportunities for immigrants and other community members in the Puget Sound region through comprehensive services focused on self-sufficiency, inclusion and advocacy.
Read2Me volunteers are trained tutors and mentors that are matched with a Kindergarten-3 rd grade student striving to meet grade level reading. They meet weekly during the school day with a site coordinator to work on reading skills to help him or her gain confidence and ability so that she or he is better able to read at grade level by the end of 3 rd grade.
We serve during the school day at 4 different Elementary Schools:
Arlington Elementary - 7202 S Pine St, Tacoma, WA 98409
Lister Elementary - 2106 E 44th St, Tacoma, WA 98404
McCarver Elementary - 2111 S J St, Tacoma, WA 98405
Manitou Park Elementary - 4330 S 66th St, Tacoma, WA 98409

Training:
- Volunteer Orientation

Commitment:
- 1-2 days/week
- 45 minutes/week
- October through May
Duties:
- Tutor one student reading for 45 minutes once a week
- Help the students understand basic reading skills such as letter and sound recognition
- Support the reading techniques children learn in the classroom
- Complete and maintain weekly tracking sheet
- Commit to a scheduled tutoring session and arrive on time
Qualifications:
- Patience and flexibility in working with children from a variety of socio-economic and cultural backgrounds
- Ability to follow through with volunteer commitments.
- Ability to communicate effectively (orally and written) in English, to follow procedures and to work in a teaching environment.

Tacoma Community House is a nationally-respected, community-based service center for immigrants, refugees, and long-time South Sound residents seeking enrichment and pathways to self-sufficiency. For 107 years, we have helped countless individuals gain the skills they need to transition out of poverty, navigate a new culture, and find personal and professional success.
Many people come to us seeking one type of service and end up discovering and utilizing others, making us one of Tacoma’s most unique "one stop shops." Annually, we provide 3,800 program services to 3,500 individuals from over 103 countries through our four core programs of Education, Employment, Immigration and Advocacy.
