Are you looking to make a positive impact on the lives of others? CJM is looking for a kind and patient volunteer to assist men at the St. Louis County Jail with English language skills. ESL is a class that CJM has led at the jail for a few years and has had great success. Helping these students with their English skills helps them to be more successful when they leave jail, in hoes that they won’t return. Leading this this class provides a vital service to the students, as well as a rewarding and eye opening experince for the volunteer. If you are interested in building relationships and improving the lives of others, this could be a great opportunity. This position is once a week: Thursday afternoons from 1pm-4pm plus prep time. The class is located at the St. Louis County Jail in Clayton. There is a current volunteer with years of experience who would be a co facilitator, as well as one substitute teacher. The current teachers will assist with materials and training. Teaching experience a plus but not required. Ability to speak a language other then English a plus but not required. Other skills required: Flexibility, open mindedness, patience, public speaking, creativity. Will need to pass background check and submit an application to St. Louis County Justice Services.
Duties include:
- Preparing for class, finding low cost or free materials to use, printing materials, etc.
- Creating a lesson plan and following through during class time
- Helping students one on one depending on their needs
- Following all St. Louis County Jail rules and protocols, adhering to their safety and security guidelines at all times

Description
Criminal Justice Ministry (CJM) was founded in 1979 in response to the growing needs of individuals and their families impacted by the criminal justice system in the St. Louis community. Specifically focused on re-entry services, CJM provides wraparound resources and services to returning citizens and displaced veterans in their journey toward successfully reentering society through housing programs, such as Release to Rent, as well as counseling, obtaining birth certificates, and food and clothing. Over the past four decades, CJM has served over 500,000 individuals and families impacted by the criminal justice system in the St. Louis Area.
CJM offers assistance during incarceration through volunteer led programming inside local jails and prisons.
