SECond Mission VISTA AmeriCorps Program
The SECond Mission VISTA AmeriCorps Program focuses on building the capacity of member campuses and community-based Veteran Serving Organizations to support veterans’ access to and persistence in higher education and their successful transition to the civilian workforce.

AmeriCorps Member Benefits
Full-time 35-40 hours/week
* Living stipend of $479.08 bi-weekly for one service year
* Education award commensurate with the Pell Grant (~$6,000) to be used for current educational expenses, to repay qualified student loans, or to be used within 7 years for educational expenses.
* Child care credit for eligible members
* Deferment of existing student loans during term of service
* Repayment of interest accrued on qualified student loans during the term of service

Goal Statement
To decrease the number of veterans living in or at risk of living in
poverty by building the capacity of veterans' support service offices at institutions of
higher education to provide programming that increases veterans' access to
and persistence in higher education

Objectives and Activities
Objective: Administer and improve uniform set of data tools to collect and track information on student
veterans, including demographics, retention, and degree completion.

Member Activity:
Activity 1: Meet with campus-based supervisor and the Office of Research/Sponsored Programs to determine protocol and receive relevant permissions.
Activity 2: Complete IRB (and associated training) if necessary
Activity 3: Meet with campus-based supervisor, school certifying official(s), and appropriate contacts from the Admissions Office, Registrar's Office, Information Technology Services, and Financial Aid Office to survey scope of current practices and determine need Activity 4: Research best practices at similar campuses
Activity 5: Develop and vet proposal (including budget) for tracking system
Activity 6: Develop tracking tools and beta test
Activity 7: Evaluate system and make necessary changes
Activity 8: Launch tracking system
Activity 9: Regularly assess results, identify and train other relevant users

Objective 2: Develop a comprehensive faculty/staff training program that addresses veteran Cultural competency, campus and community resources for veterans' support, working with veterans with both visible and invisible disabilities, and campus protocol and procedures around behavioral health issues.

Member Activity:
Activity 1: Map campus-based resources for student veterans
Activity 2: Conduct informational interviews with campus-based service providers (behavioral health
specialists, disability/inclusion specialists, tutoring center administrators, etc.)
Activity 3: Conduct survey of general faculty and staff regarding knowledge of student veterans' and cultural competency
Activity 4: Conduct focus groups of faculty, staff, and student veterans
Activity 5: Research best practices for training at comparable institutions
Activity 6: Develop training curricula, associated materials, and evaluations
Activity 7: Identify facilitators if necessary
Activity 8: Schedule and market trainings
Activity 9: Evaluate and make necessary changes
Activity 10: Resurvey general faculty and staff regarding knowledge of student veterans' and cultural competency to assess changes, emerging needs, etc

Objective 3: Develop peer-to-peer mentoring and peer support programs for incoming veteran
Freshmen and transfer students.
Member Activity:
Activity 1: Research best practices for peer-to-peer mentoring programs
Activity 2: Survey student veterans in their junior and senior years about campus-specific
transition issues
Activity 3: Survey student veterans in their first and second years around interest in
peer mentoring
Activity 4: Create program materials, including but not limited to training documents,
Marketing materials, protocols, schedules, and assessment mechanisms

K2H Civic Futures AmeriCorps Program

The K2H Civic Futures AmeriCorps Program focuses on civic learning and engagement opportunities and skill development for kindergarten through higher education (K-H) students. In addition, the K2H program strengthens partnership pipelines between K-12 systems and higher education systems that create continuity for civic learning and engagement initiatives as students transition from K-12 to higher education.
