ORGANIZATION: Pan African Sanctuary Alliance (PASA)

  • 1 person is interested

The Pan African Sanctuary Alliance (PASA) is the largest association of wildlife centers in Africa.

PASA advocates for its member organizations on an international scale, provides them with support, and works closely with them to raise awareness globally about wildlife conservation issues.

Join a team of Portland-based volunteers who are passionate about protecting Africa’s primates and share your love for animals with others. You will be trained and supported in effective advocacy and outreach strategies.

We currently need people to attend local events on PASA’s behalf. Join our booth and educate members of the public on the threats primates are facing in Africa. Raise awareness regarding the bushmeat trade and illegal pet trade to help primates around the globe.

This is an ideal position for any student, recent graduate, or young professional who wishes to get experience in outreach, the animal welfare field, or international wildlife conservation.

Responsibilities:

  • Attend and represent PASA at local events such as VegOut!, VegFest, and Cascade African Film Festival
  • Assist as needed on planning events, such as dropping off tabling supplies and communicating with the event host. Some events may require arriving early to set-up or stay late to pack up.
  • Act as an ambassador for PASA in accordance to our mission and published materials

Skills/Qualifications

  • Must have transportation to and from events in the Portland area
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Must be self-motivated
  • Able to communicate sensitive information with tact
  • Interest or knowledge in Africa and/or animals, or willingness to learn
  • Comfortable speaking with strangers about animal welfare and conservation

Training will be provided. Tabling and events opportunities are ongoing, and typically occur on weekends. We currently table at 4-5 events per year. Volunteer shifts range from 2 hours to 4 hours a day and are flexible.

If interested, please send your resume and an email to Kaitlyn at info@pasa.org.

Mission Statement

To support and represent PASA members in their critical work to protect and prevent the extinction of Africa’s primates.

Description

Formed in Entebbe, Uganda in 2000, PASA has grown from a loose collection of primate orphanages into a powerful organization that places a premium on standards of health, welfare, husbandry, education, conservation and accountability.

At present, 23 PASA members in 13 countries that span the breadth and depth of the African continent collectively care for more than 850 chimpanzees, 80 gorillas, 65 bonobos and more than 2,500 other primates.

PASA serves as a source of strength and inspiration for its members, working to facilitate great ape confiscations and transfers, locate funding, raise standards of health, and promote educational outreach. PASA also stages annual workshops for sanctuary managers, veterinary healthcare workers, educators, and keepers, and publishes manuals that cover primate healthcare, conservation education, and sanctuary operations.
